Rave The Righteous Way

People think they can’t enjoy the nightlife once they become a christian but more and more christian raves are popping up and they are proving that we can still enjoy the flashing lights and the vibrations that flood our body. This is more than a rave, at its core this is a space where people can express themselves through dance, rhythm, bass and flashing lights.

Righteous Raves is an environment where christians who enjoy house and electronic dance music can freely express themselves through dance and rhythm. Mr Eric Clottey, the founder, hires venues which sometimes are in churches. He creates an environment where people are free to express themselves however they want. The events are captured to showcase the electric energy and lively atmosphere. Mr Clottey explains “If the model is not there, you have to create the container yourself.”

Eric explains how when he first got saved, he mostly listened to gospel house music. Mr Clottey tells us how God spoke to him clearly through one powerful song, which included a section with someone preaching the Word of God; this had a lasting impact on Eric’s walk with Christ.

After speaking to Eric’s wife, Sarah, she describes the raves as a place where people can freely express themselves through their bodies, using dance to worship God. Sarah goes on to say “we created righteous raves to offer a space for people who love this kind of music; certainly for those who love to use their bodies in dance, freedom, expressing themselves differently where they might feel confined in a church space.”

When asked about how the they juggle parenthood, full time work and their personal lives, Sarah admits it is a tricky balance; however, they are very passionate and it is a joy for them to serve God in this way. Sarah says, “There are so many spaces out there that are used for the world and to glorify things that are very ungodly, and he (Eric Clottey) wants to reclaim all of that for God.”

Sarah explains that her husband has a fantastic gift; he loves producing music and is so creative. “He has so many ideas that they just come out of him,” she adds. “Creativity is never forced; it has to come out. He’s been given that gift, and he really wants to use it for God.”

I wanted to know if the Clotteys receive the same joy as those who attend the events. Sarah shared with me how impactful hosting these events is for them.

For the Clotteys, their approach is simply to create a space where self expression and faith can coexist. Being in the room, you can feel the freedom and joy Sarah talks about, and it’s obvious why this environment is special to everyone who attends. Sarah explains how both she and her husband are poured into it, and she goes on to say, “I love being in the room, doing the dancing and worship myself; but I also love hearing people come and have all those different experiences.”

Mrs Clottey shares a testimony of an attendee who came to one of their events and explained how, before Christ, they loved going to raves. When they came to Christ, they felt shame for still wanting to dance like they were at a rave, not realising there were environments like Righteous Raves where they could freely express themselves in a Christian context. This is a great reminder that God always intended us to be joyful and move freely, expressing ourselves in different, exciting ways.

Mrs Clottey goes on to say that running these events helps remove the taboo that once you give your life to Christ, you can no longer enjoy things like this. Sarah adds, “This is allowed. It is a sober space, and it’s important to us to do something that is good and do it in a clean way, so that people can find that freedom and experience it for themselves.”

Walking into the Righteous Raves, you instantly feel a shift in your spirit. At first, you’re a bit clueless because you don’t know what to expect, but once you’re inside, you feel comfortable being yourself. There is something about being in an environment where you are welcome to jump across the room, or to sit quietly with God in the corner while feeling the beautiful vibrations of the music flooding your body. Being in the room, closing your eyes and just allowing your body to move however it wants, letting your spirit take over, is exhilarating. When you understand that no one is judging you and you can be in the presence of God and move however you want, it’s similar to how King David passionately danced in front of the Lord (2 Samuel 6:14).

I encourage you to book into their next event and experience it firsthand. Don’t think twice about it, go with an open mind and an expectant heart, ready to meet with God.

I was over the moon when I saw that they had their own merch! It’s one of my favourite ways to remember the night. Righteous Raves have merch available on their website, including t-shirts and hoodies. The quality is really good and I love their logo. Mr Clottey mentions “what if we had a person that looked like they were dancing with a saint kind of glow on their head?” He goes on to explain how this was the idea for Righteous Raves. Wearing their merch is a great way to evangelise while still feeling part of the community outside of the events.

Righteous Raves challenges the taboo that faith and nightlife cannot mix; the Clotteys give christians an environment where they can bring down stereotypes and freely express themselves. I think it also shows how great God is; He is omnipresent and isn’t afraid to dwell in places people usually overlook. Where the world uses raves to promote unholy activities, environments like Righteous Raves creates opportunities for revival and freedom.
